Cultural Collections and Generative AI -- Report Now Available

This summer, we supported two Generative AI Fellows working in the University Library's Cultural Collections: Dr Frances Varley and Dr Stuart Bowes. They shared their projects at a seminar hosted in DCCH [UoL login required]. Frances worked on mapping the Bedford trade card collection, while Stuart researched links between cultural collections and academic research outputs. Both fellows' projects took a critical eye to the opportunities for collaborative, digital scholarship offered by Generative AI tools, highlighting both limitations and future potential.

Their final fellowship report is now available through White Rose Research Online. This report brings together Frances' and Stuart's research projects, indicating the possibilities and pitfalls of Generative AI use in cultural collections research. It also calls for additional critical engagement with Generative AI tools' outputs within GLAMA sectors, and the importance of cultural practitioners as active participants in conversations around these tools.
