Support for text mining and data analysis methods for primary sources with GALE
There are two upcoming opportunities for researchers to get support using the GALE Digital Scholar Lab, a set of no-code tools for exploring, visualising and analysing the wealth of resources available through University of Leeds Libraries' subscription to GALE Primary Sources, as well as new tools to upload your own texts. To find out more about the Lab, its tools and some of the collections you can explore with it, through one (or both!) of these upcoming events:
Digital Scholar Lab Drop in, 11 and 12 October
GALE’s Head of Academic Partnerships, Chris Houghton, will be visiting Leeds in October and will be available to demonstrate these for staff who are interested in using its digital text analysis tools in their teaching and/or research, as well as consult on the primary source collections that may be relevant to your research. Chris will be available at the DCCH open showcase on Wednesday 11 October, 2-3pm (Sheppard Room, off the Treasures Gallery), and for a drop-in at the hub office (Brotherton Ground Floor, 3.27) on Thursday 12 October, 10am-2pm. Feel free to stop by, or if you’re unable to make those times, you can contact Chris directly here to arrange a meeting.
Workshop: Introduction to Digital Scholar Lab, 9 November
GALE Product Trainer, Carolyn Beckford, will be in Leeds to offer a two-hour introductory, hands-on workshop to the Digital Scholar Lab on Thursday 9 November. Carolyn will provide in depth details on the lab: why it was created, how it works, and how it supports research. You can find out what’s new for 2023 with the Gale Digital Scholar Lab (including text upload of your own sources), and what enhancements have been made to the lab environment. Come along, bring your own device, and explore the Gale Digital Scholar Lab up close.
The workshop will be in-person and is open to all staff and PGRs in the first instance. Follow the links to book a place on the morning session (10-12) or the afternoon session (2:30-4:30).
Please only book one session: the afternoon session will be a repeat of the morning session.
If you are unable to attend either session but would like to attend a future online training session, please contact us to express your interest.
