This workshop, designed for beginners, is a short ‘taster’ session that aims to showcase the value of Social Network Analysis (SNA) – in which the relationships between individuals and/or groups that interact with each other are examined – with humanities research in mind. It furthermore functions as an introduction to the software package Gephi, which can be used to create different social network visualisations that not only help to better understand the underlying workings of those networks, but also assist in drawing conclusions and raising further lines of query.

The workshop led by Dr Tino Oudesluijs from the The John Rylands Research Institute and Library, will introduce the practical and conceptual principles of Social Network Analysis and how to create simple visualisations. The workshop will develop your understanding of how and why SNA can be used to pursue humanities-based research questions, with a hands-on session on using Gephi, in which participants will collectively create network visualisations using provided datasets. The skills developed in this session will be applicable to different types of networks ranging from small and contemporary to large and historical.

The workshop is aimed at researchers in AHC or cognate disciplines who would like to develop skills in digital approaches to analysing data with network qualities/characteristics. The workshop will support researchers who would like to propose digital approaches to research in future research and funding applications.

Workshop format: Information presentation and interactive workshop.

Technical experience required: None.

Required equipment: Working laptop with an internet connection. You will need to install the latest version of Gephi on your laptop before attending the workshop.  If you have a UoL issued laptop you will be able to do this through AppsAnywhere.

During the workshop we will work with small datasets in CSV format. Example datasets will be provided.

To join fill out this form. A UoL email address is required to register.  Open to all staff and AHC PGR students.  This is an IN-PERSON event.
